An Easy Way to Take the Back

Taking someone’s back and achieving rearmount moves you right to the pinnacle of the BJJ positional hierarchy (click here for a downloadable guide to the BJJ positions).

From the back you can attack your opponent with chokes and armlocks at will. By contrast he has very, very limited attacks he can use on you since all his weapons are facing away from you.

Here’s one of my favorite ways to take the back that I learned from Erik Paulson.  It very simple and works both with and without the gi.

Check it out!

Here’s a quick review of the main steps in this attack…

The North-South position in the both arms under his arms variation

1, Start in the North-South position with both your arms under his arms

Link your hands across his chest (or grab his lapels in the gi)

2, Link your hands across his chest (in the gi you would grab both of his lapels which provides a VERY secure grip)

Drive forward onto your feet, sitting him up onto his butt

3, Drive forward onto your feet, sitting him up onto his butt

His head pops out from under your body to in front of your body

4, His head pops out from under your body to come in front of your body

Maintain your grips and start to sit back

5, Maintain your grips and start to sit back

Fall back, insert your hooks and achieve rear mount

6, Fall back, insert your hooks and achieve rear mount

Two More High Percentage Back Takes

The back take I just showed you is simple and surprising, but you need more than one way to achieve a goal in BJJ!

Here from The BJJ Formula are two back take maneuvers that are used often in high level competition, namely the ‘Chair Sit’ and the ‘Low Hook’ techniques.

Master these techniques and you’ll be well on your way to being a back taking machine!
