A Powerful Surprise Choke Attack from Sidemount

This is one of my very favourite attacks from Sidemount. It works in a BJJ context (i.e. with the gi), in submission grappling, and even in MMA.

It’s a very powerful attack, but the best thing about is that if it doesn’t work then you don’t typically lose position. You stay on top and can easily switch to a followup attack.

I call it the ‘Breastroke Choke’, but it’s also known as the Reverse Arm Triangle. It’s a signature move of both Marcus Soares and Erik Paulson, who are two of my biggest grappling influences. They both showed me little details that made it MUCH more effective, which I share with you in the video below.

I recently taught this to a friend. I did it on him a few times, explained it, and then he did it on me once or twice. The next day, with no additional practice, he used it to tap out a skilled brown belt.

Watch the video below and maybe you’ll choke out a brown belt the next time you’re on the mat too!

P.S. If you enjoy this style of teaching, and you want check out my book called A Roadmap for BJJ, then click here to download it for free. It’s all about how to get good at BJJ as fast as possible, and how to take this most complicated of martial arts and make it simple and straightforward!
