I feel absolutely compelled to explain a thing to everyone who may not understand why Jiu Jitsu people are claiming last night’s action at UFC 196 as a victory for BJJ itself.
There is a formula that has been lain out since the beginning by Gracie Jiu Jitsu that is intended to provide a smaller, weaker fighter with the tools needed to survive and defeat a larger, stronger, or superior striking opponent. Take note of the last part of that statement. As a Muay Thai guy, I want to strike not go to the ground, but if you’re out striking me I’m going to need to find out how good your ground game is; that’s the formula. Bigger, stronger, better striking. You need to neutralize that advantage by entangling and bringing them down to a horizontal plane where dominant Jiu Jitsu can be applied.
Last night two fighters fought superior striking and finished them both with superior Jiu Jitsu. That’s why BJJ guys are claiming victory.(I’ve actually seen a couple who don’t get it…scary. One faxia preta…)
When this all started, there were mostly individuals highly trained in their art and none other. The Gracies opened that up for the world and changed the fight game, making their Jiu Jitsu forever a part of the fighter’s necessary tool kit. Last night was an affirmation that the formula still works. We all know now that Muay Thai, boxing, and wrestling all have a strong hand in a fighter having a WELL ROUNDED GAME which will enable them to face ANY OPPONENT, but at the end of the day, BJJ can still neutralize the strengths of those INDIVIDUALLY using leverage, timing, and technique.
The moral of the story? MMA = mixed martial arts. Study up on the history of this modern art of warfare and learn the subtle details of the ones who have gone before you so that you can take that knowledge and compound it with your own experience. Last night was a clinic on what MUST be done and that my friends is what BJJ is all about. Survive, persevere, never stop fighting, and go for the finish. Takedown or sweep, pass, side control, knee on belly, mount, take the back, mata leao! Follow the path. Oss! ~ The Old Dirty BJJ Bastard
