What’s The Correct Way To Learn Jiu-Jitsu?

Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is fun! Especially the rolling part, when you can clash heads with your training partners, sweat your heart out, and just feel great overall. On the flip side, however, learning BJJ doesn’t always bring out the best of feelings; as frustration and doubt creep in when new techniques aren’t going your way.
For that reason, you might be asking yourself: „What is the correct way to learn Jiu-Jitsu?“ Well, here’s a part of the answer.

THE CORRECT WAY TO LEARN BJJ

Truth be told, there is no one „correct“ and „best“ way to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But nevertheless, there are some things that you should keep in mind if you want to improve to the best of your abilities.

The first thing that you should think about is whether or not the BJJ academy you’re training at has a curriculum. If your coach(es) are teaching techniques randomly, then you’re losing out on a lot of progress; so, if at all possible, be on the look out for a better academy.
With that said, even if your Jiu-Jitsu gym has a curriculum, is it made out of gradual progression? As in, are the coaches taking you gradually from one technique to another? If they’re showing you a basic Mount escape one day and how to enter the Honey Hole the second, then something’s off.

But then again, when it comes to yourself and the way you do things… Are you coming to the class with purpose? If you’re coming to just go through the motions, don’t expect much from your progress; as all worthwhile improvements come with focus and dedication.
Therefore, the next time you’re rolling, don’t just go for as many submissions as you can. Don’t aimlessly try to defend against higher-ranked practitioners. Rather, pick a move or two you want to drill – and then drill it. Day after day, week after week; with gradual intensity, if possible, as well.

Professor Ryan Young, from Kama Jiu-Jitsu, explains more about these „correct“ ways to training BJJ on the video below:
