UFC 286: Fighter Gets KO’d, Tries To Grapple Referee

UFC 286 saw a number of great fights, as well as a weird ending to one of them… When a fighter tried to grapple referee Marc Goddard.

Namely, it was a match between Yanal Ashmoz and Sam Patterson. It was a debut for Ashmoz, who put on a spectacular fight.
He tripped Patterson and then landed a big left hand, dropping his opponent to the floor. The subsequent ground-and-pound left Patterson KO’d fast, with Ashmoz winning the fight.

However, Patterson was severely disoriented after regaining consciousness.
It seemed that he was unaware that the fight was over – and he started trying to grapple with referee Marc Goddard, both on the ground and on the feet (who is, actually, a seasoned BJJ black belt).

Watch the incident take place on the video below:

Some argued that this was a late stoppage by Goddard, who is one of the best MMA referees in the world.
Nevertheless, this goes on to show how dangerous it can be to fight in mixed martial arts – with brain trauma that follows a knockout sometimes being blatantly obvious.

Patterson will probably have to pause with fighting for some time, until the doctors grant him the permission to get back in the octagon.
