The matter of the fact is that life can be very difficult… And that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu should be an outlet for you and your stress; not an addition to it.
Nevertheless, a lot of BJJ students get really worked up about how well they do on the mats. And this only adds to their stress, which is a huge issue.
Tom DeBlass explains why and what needs to be done:
The same reason why so many people quit Jiu-Jitsu is the same reason why many people continue Jiu-Jitsu – it’s hard and it’s challenging.
We have to look at it as a game, nothing more. We’re just playing a game. Keep it fun and understand that the tougher you are on yourself, the more you’re going to make Jiu-Jitsu a stress in your life… Rather than a stress-reliever.
You all have hard lives already! Work is hard, family life can be hard, everything can be hard… When you get on those mats, don’t make it harder! Just have fun.
Tom emphasizes that you need to have fun in BJJ, above everything else:
It doesn’t matter if you’re getting tapped or if you’re doing the tapping. Just show up and have fun.
Embrace the fact that it’s challenging. There’s beauty in challenge, right? I promise you it’s worth it. Continue on your journey, and you’re never ever going to regret it.
