The Stack Pass is one of those BJJ techniques that you learn during your first couple of training sessions. However, knowing just the basics of this move isn’t going to cut it; for, as soon as you move past the blue belt level, you’re going to have trouble finishing it.
Nick “Chewy” Albin took it upon himself to demonstrate some of the details that make this technique work at a black belt level. Check them out.
BLACK BELT STACK PASS DETAILS
To make your Stack Pass better, the first thing you’ve got to change about it is the very entry into it. You shouldn’t just “dive into it”; rather, you’ll need to work for it from an angle and from the training partner’s reaction. Make them post, push them flat onto their back, make them off-balanced even further… Whatever is necessary to go for that double under grip.
Once you get that grip, don’t make yourself too tall. This will make it easy for your training partners to push you off with their legs. Instead, Chewy advises you to lower yourself down, low below their knees.
From there, do a simple sit out to get an angle. Then you can proceed with your Stack Pass.
If the training partner posts on your hip to prevent the pass, there’s actually a really easy way to clear their arm. Simply step in to your close leg with your far leg (to establish a solid base); and then use that close leg to strip the training partner’s arm off of your hip.
