Today’s video clip is about a rarely-discussed but absolutely essential aspect of the Spider Guard.
It’s the secret sauce of the Spider Guard. And it comes down to pressure…
Pressure is one of those things that can be hard to see if you don’t know what you’re looking for. But there’s no mistaking pressure when you feel it!
I outweigh Elliott by at least 50 lbs, but because he’s so good at generating pressure that while filming this video I felt like a marionette at times, and getting back to decent posture was very, very difficult.
It comes down to turning the other person into a scarecrow using push-pull pressure on his arms and on other parts of his body. Pressure keeps you safe from guard passes, and also helps you set up tons of sweeps, attacks, and submissions.
In this 4 minute, 19 second long video Elliott does a fantastic job of breaking down the underlying concept of pressure. And then he shows you exactly how to generate it using the grips and hooks that you already have in position anytime you’re in the Spider Guard.
