The Dangerous Myth About Leg Locks In BJJ

Weeks ago, second-degree BJJ black belt Nick “Chewy” Albin got a question from a student who was wondering if he should leave his gym because his instructor wouldn’t let him practice leg locks.  Chewy said he should try to talk it out with his instructor.

After the video, Albin received many comments talking about how dangerous leg locks can be.

But is that true? Are leg locks any more dangerous than other submissions.

According to Chewy, no.  Armbars come with their dangers, as do all submissions in BJJ. After all, submissions are meant to hurt, and if it hurts, it’s probably not good for you.

In fact, Chewy thinks the most dangerous submission is the Kimura, an upper body submission that attacks a part your shoulder.  Albin argues that the mobility of the shoulder joint makes the move particularly dangerous.

As with any submission, Professor Albin emphasizes that the key is rolling with control. When you apply a submission in the gym, you apply it slowly, and release as soon as your opponent taps.

Check out Nick “Chewy” Albin’s video above.
