The star sweep is actually a fairly basic sweep. In fact, I would even recommend it for beginners who still have trouble moving their hips side to side while maintaining guard. The technique doesn’t require a subtle hip-shift. Instead, all that is required is for a person to be able to do a backwards roll.
the video quality is low, and the sound isn’t very good, but Renzo shows the tiny details that make it work. He reaches an underhook around an opponent’s ankle while keeping his guard closed. When he is ready, he uses his leg (on the same side as his underhook) to push himself off of his opponent and roll backwards to the side of him. Once he lands, he simple picks the ankle out from under his opponent. Give it a watch, and try it out.
