Should BJJ Competitors Pay More Attention To Their BMI’s?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is an equation used to determine how much you should weigh relative to your height.

It’s not perfect. As Coach Tom from the Grappling Academy points out in the video, and as anyone can see, he is an incredibly healthy guy, but he would be considered overweight going by the BMI scale.

However, BMI can be used to find your ideal competition jiu-jitsu weight. Tom cites a study, though he does not link it, which claims that the BMI’s of champions were all around 25, 26, and 27.

Coach Tom claims that this BMI will not only help your jiu-jitsu but help you stay alive longer.

Check out his full video below. What do you think? Should jiu-jitsu competitors pay more attention to their BMI’s?
