Nick “Chewy” Albin: “On The Mats, We Become Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable”

If you want to achieve anything “worthwhile” – whatever that word means for you – in life, then there’s no denying the fact that you’ll feel uncomfortable on the road to success. Quite uncomfortable at times, to say the least.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is like that. But one of the amazing things about our sport is that it makes you feel comfortable with being uncomfortable. Nick “Chewy” Albin shares why this is so great:

Everyone of us has hidden abilities waiting to show to their surface. Think of them as your superpowers. The trick is, you probably won’t discover your hidden superpower until you’ve been challenged and get a little uncomfortable.

I think this is a beautiful aspect of Jiu-Jitsu training. On the mats we become comfortable with uncomfortable feelings. Being a little stressed, being unsure of ourselves, failing over and over again.
⁣And we become stronger, not in spite of these things, but because of them.

For Chewy, becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable has been one of the biggest achievements:⁣

This aspect of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (and grappling) has been one of the most powerful things I’ve been able to translate into my life off the mat. Since most of my favorite accomplishments and proudest moments were usually preceded by fear and uncertainty.
