Hey… Can we share a small piece of advice with you? Yes? Well, here it is: simplify your BJJ game. You’re making it way too complicated, and that’s the reason why you’re not making the amount of progress that you’d like to make!
So, the solution is to make it simpler and go for setups that are somewhat straightforward. For instance, the following High Elbow Guillotine Choke setup is easy to hit from Butterfly Guard.
Butterfly Guard “king” – Marcelo Garcia – demonstrates the setup.
MARCELO GARCIA’S EASY GUILLOTINE SETUP FROM BUTTERFLY GUARD
Marcelo usually sets up his Butterfly Guard attacks by primarily going for arm control (preferably both arms’ wrists). He also goes for “head clasps” with one arm, while the other “chops” the opponent’s arm. However, if the opponent is negating wrist grips and is peeling the head clasp off, then you can also go for the double elbow grip.
It’s exactly as it sounds like. You’ll grip both of the opponent’s elbows (a bit behind them, towards the triceps, to be more exact). Then, you’ll scoot more underneath them and use your legs and grips to lift and extend them forwards.
This will prompt a reaction on their part – an extension of neck and arms – which you can then use to set up your High Elbow Guillotine Choke.
