The Felix Event Center in Azusa, Calif., held this Saturday the 2018 edition of the Los Angeles BJJ Pro, one of the IBJJF’s pro events that pay out cash prizes to their champions.
In the men’s section, there was tough competition vying for top prizes of 4,000 dollars. At featherweight, Hiago George (Cicero Costha) beat Thiago Macedo (RP BJJ) to bag the money. At middleweight, world champion Otávio Sousa (GB) outplayed a young Michael Liera Jr. (Atos) to the same effect.
Heavyweight Lucas Hulk (Atos) defeated Arnaldo Maidana (Checkmat). Fellipe Trovo (GB) was the ultra-heavyweight champion — but, it being a walkover win, he made no money, as the Federation determines there must be at least four athletes in a division if it is to pay out cash. The second-place finishers got 1,000 dollars each.
In the women’s section, which pays its absolute champion, it was Nathalie Ribeiro’s day. Unopposed at featherweight, she reached the absolute final against world champion Talita Treta (NS Brotherhood), who chose to step aside and let Nathalie win the gold medal as well as the 1,500-dollar top prize.
