Getting past your opponent’s legs and into an advantageous position is one of the most fundamental aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and while everyone loves a good cartwheel pass, the most simple guard passes are almost always the most effective. Even John Danaher, the man regarded as one of the most important figures in the evolution of the leglock game, has been open about how even those reliant on leglocks still need to develop a solid guard-passing game. It’s always tempting to focus on a unique technique or something flashy that makes you look amazing if you manage to pull it off, but simple guard passes will not only allow you to learn how to progress to a dominant position quicker, but they often tend to be higher percentage techniques as well.
The above video gives us seven different techniques to choose from the next time you attempt to get past your opponent’s guard and while it’s impossible to say that they’ll work every time, they’re definitely effective. For those of you looking for more advanced guard passes, Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida’s folding pass is one that has consistently worked at the very highest levels of competition. Or for those that might be content with the guard passes above, there’s always the option of adding immediate submission attempts into your arsenal after passing your opponent’s guard instead.
