A lot of jiu-jitsu guys struggle on their feet, especially when they’re facing a superior wrestler.
Fortunately there’s a way to use a wrestler’s own reactions against him, and that’s by jumping into a guillotine choke
In this technique you first fake low and threaten a double leg takedown or a low single takedown. When he does the right thing and level changes to defend against the shot then you go high and secure the choke.
You can then finish the choke on your feet (especially if you use the ‘high elbow’ details shared by Elliott in the video below), or pull him into your closed guard.

The submission is very powerful and will work shockingly often, but even if it doesn’t you’ve still taken control of the match and sucked him into your world!
And even if you never do any standup there are still a TON of high level details about setting up and finishing the guillotine in this video.

P.S. In the video above you learned how to use the threat of the low single to set up a guillotine choke in no gi. But you can ALSO just finish the low single and then pursue the submission with both people on the ground.

P.P.S. This technique is from the brand new 30 Second Fight Finishes instructional in app, DVD, and online streaming formats featuring Elliott Bayev and myself.
In it you’ll learn 40 different strategies to end a match as fast as possible. These strategies cover situations where A) both you and your opponent are on your feet, B) where you’ve pulled guard, and C) where he’s pulled guard first.
By having a plan for each of these different options you’ll alway way to lock in a choke, armlock, or leglock to end the match quickly!
