The under-64 kg winner of the Gramado chapter of the WPJJ tryouts last March, Isaque Paiva of Saikoo academy hasn’t had the same good fortune in other competitions since. However, the black belt is dead set on putting an end to his dearth of positive results when the IBJJF São Paulo Open comes around, on August 25 and 26. “I really want to compete and again try for a CBJJ medal. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get the gold. I’ve been striking out, but I’m not going to stop trying. I’ve been training a lot, and God willing, I’ll prevail,” he told GRACIEMAG.com.
“I’m training hard non-stop the entire week, doing both Jiu-Jitsu and physical conditioning. I have to keep up my physical conditioning. I do physical conditioning three times a week. As far as Jiu-Jitsu’s concerned, I’ve been practicing a variety of positions, fixing some errors I’d made at the latest championships, and in specific training, improving my guard,” added “Boia”, as he is known.
“To improve my guard, at every training session I designate part of the time only to guard positions. If I want to keep people from passing my guard, I have to get into the position and repeat it over and over again, just as I would do if I were having trouble with passing. For this type of training you have to have a free-flowing game, persist a lot,” he explained.
What about you, have you secured your spot at the São Paulo Open? No? Then better rush, as sign-ups end this Thursday, August 16.
