Everyone who starts training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has one dream in common… To become a BJJ black belt. But even though all would like to earn it, can everyone actually do it? More importantly, can you become a black belt?
There are two extremely important factors that will play a crucial role in your success (or failure).
CAN YOU BECOME A BJJ BLACK BELT?
The first factor is your technicality. And yes, it’s exactly what you’d expect it to be; it’s a question of how good your skills are.
How well can you perform a given set of techniques and how successful are you in their application during rolls or competition? This will play an enormous role on your road to a BJJ black belt.
However, it isn’t enough to just have a proclivity towards skills or to have a certain skill level in and of itself… You also have to have the right physicality to go with it.
In simple terms: you may be able to perform certain techniques. But if your body is preventing you from actually doing them when necessary – this will be an obstacle.
Maybe it’s the fact that you’ve started training in old age, maybe your mind-body connection isn’t right when it comes to performing techniques, or maybe it’s something else… But whatever it may be, this still shouldn’t stop you from training.
For, the ultimate goal of Jiu-Jitsu isn’t to get your black belt. It’s to improve yourself and to see how far you can go.
And who knows. Maybe you’ll be able to get that BJJ black belt nevertheless, despite what your technicality and physicality seem to dictate.
Just don’t quit! Professor Young, from Kama Jiu-Jitsu, explains further on the video below:
