If your foot’s in danger, you may want to pull the “hand brake”

Foot attacks are some of the most effective and devastating in the Jiu-Jitsu arsenal, especially in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, as you well know from ADCC 2011. How do you defend against them? Ask your teacher about it, test out the different variations in the academy, and before all else, be careful and tactful, whether you’re attacking or defending.

Now if you find you get caught in the hold some day, your extreme salvation may be to counter-attack with the “hand brake.” Learn more about this artifice in the first video below, if just to understand what’s going on when someone gets you in one. Again, a word of caution, go slow when performing these moves!

Further below are some more ways of defending your ankle, taught by Dean Lister and Rener Gracie. Practice them slowly, carefully, and under a teacher’s supervision.
