How to Pass Mission Control in the Rubber Guard and Lockdown Half Guard

The popular no gi grappling system 10th planet jiu-jitsu has many unique positions and strategies.

Their closed rubber guard system, which emphasises and requires quite a bit of flexibility, starts with a position called ‘Mission Control’. In Mission Control you get one foot on your opponent’s hip and hook your leg behind his neck to keep his posture broken.  From here there are numerous available, including armbars, triangles, omoplatas and more.

The 10th planet half guard system is based around the ‘Lockdown’, which is half guard in which you use the double triangle to immobilise the leg of your opponent that lies between your own leg.  Lockdown can lead to many different different sweeps and leglocks.

Both of these positions – Mission Control and Lockdown – can be very dangerous and difficult to pass if you’re not familiar with them – there have been many no gi tournaments in which experienced competitors have been given fits by running into these positions for the first time.

So if you run into either position without knowing what to do then you’re in a TON of trouble.

To make sure that you have an answer if you get caught in Mission control or the Lockdown here is a tutorial that Rob Biernacki filmed for Grapplearts.

Check it out – in today’s jiu-jitsu environment these are two important skills to have!

P.S.  Click here for more information about The Top Game and Guard Passing app that Rob refers to early in the video.  It’s a very good instructional with lots of concrete techniques and drills that you can immediately incorporate into your training.
