A sprawl is the enemy of a takedown. In jiu-jitsu or wrestling, there are few things more frustrating than finding a great opening for a single-leg attempt, only for your opponent to sprawl out and destroy your chances of a takedown while also forcing you to your knees. But you don’t have to watch your takedown attempt die before your very eyes.
In this clip, ADCC veteran Alec Baulding teams up with “Coach Vinny” to demonstrate a way that you can still gain control of your opponent even if they squash your initial takedown attempt with a sprawl. This will take some practice if you’re inexperienced with wrestling, but it’s well worth the effort!
