The windshield wiper is a leg motion used by a TON of high level BJJ guys to pass the guard (and also to showboat sometimes).
It allows you to cross from one side of your opponent’s body to the other without him entangling you in either guard or half guard.
For example, let’s say that you’re passing the guard to your right and your opponent counters by high-legging (i.e. stepping over your head) with his left trailing leg just like in the photo above. You’re now blocked from continuing to your right by the presence of his left leg.
But if you’re adept at the windshield wiper movement you can easily change directions, pass back over his pinned right leg, pass the guard and often expose your opponent’s back at the same time.
It’s a very slick answer to a very common problem.
The windshield wiper is also the basis of a popular BJJ drill where you rep the movement left and right repeatedly. This is a great warmup drill that also grooves a very useful movement into your mind and body.
But a lot of people do the windshield wiper wrong. They don’t create the right angles, they don’t control the legs the right way, or they move their feet so that they get caught back in guard.
