How Should You Use Instructionals To Improve In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

You’re passionate about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and you want to improve in it as best and as fast as you can… So you buy an instructional – but now what?

How should you use BJJ instructionals? And how are you supposed to extract the most amount of value from them?
Giancarlo Bodoni has some great advice on the topic.

HOW TO USE BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU INSTRUCTIONALS

Before you even buy the instructional, Bodoni emphasizes that you should do your homework. This means that you shouldn’t purchase the instructional “just because”; but rather, you need to do your research.
Google the person who’s teaching within, see if they have videos on YouTube where they explain techniques. And notice whether or not they’re a good teacher (and if their teaching style suits you).

You also need to choose a topic that suits you. For, you can buy all of the instructionals in the world, but if none of them are relevant to your progression in the sport… You won’t get very far.
So, pick an instructional with a topic that is most relevant to what you want to study and work on.

Then again, you should work incrementally and consistently. Don’t watch the entire instructional at one sitting. You’ll be much better off by watching 20-30 minutes per day, every day.
You’ll retain that much more.

Also, feel free to revisit the topic and the sections of the instructional. Bodoni emphasizes that, sure, you’ll feel as if you’ve made a lot of progress and that the sections you went through (or even the instructional itself) are “done with”.
However, when you (as you inevitably will) begin to feel stuck on something, don’t feel bad for going back and revisiting the topics or the instructional. It’s supposed to be that way.

And lastly, you should use the instructionals as a supplement to your training. They’re not the main thing – the main and most important thing should always be mat time.

Bear in mind that, all in all, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructional videos and series will be worth your money only if you put in the effort to try and learn the stuff that’s shown in them.
Yes, seeing a mind-blowing detail or a novel technique might inspire you to use it in a roll or two… But if you want to make it a part of your game, then you will have to drill it. And probably drill it a lot.
