Gordon Ryan recently met with Marcelo Garcia, one of the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes of all time – who has been undergoing therapy due to stomach cancer.
Ryan shared the details about their encounter:
We haven’t spoken much throughout my career, but he’s always been nothing but nice to me.
We speak often now and I really feel for Marcelo.I know what it feels like to wake up everyday and just wish you could go back to sleep. I know what it feels like to be miserable and suffering 24 hours a day.
I know what it feels like to be out of the limelight and have people forget about you while you’re battling illness.I’ve never had cancer, but I know what it’s like to suffer with debilitating illness at a young age.
So, he decided to make a generous offer to Garcia:
I felt that in my heart that I have to do something to help now that i am healthier than I’ve been.
I reached out to BJJ Fanatics a few months ago and asked to teach a seminar with Bernardo, and to film that seminar.100% of the proceeds from the seminar will go to Marcelo to help with his treatment and the recording of the seminar will be for sale on BJJ Fanatics thereafter, with 100% of proceeds going to Marcelo as well.
Gordon emphasized that Marcelo didn’t ask for any of it, but that he simply accepted the offer.
