ADCC medalist Garry Tonon has been one of the many BJJ academy owners whose businesses have been uprooted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, though, his gym, Brunswick BJJ, is back in business at a new location.
Tonon’s trouble started in May when he was forced to close down Brunswick BJJ when the primary leaseholder in the building went bankrupt. Though Tonon was able and willing to continue paying for his own lease, the building’s owner decided not to renegotiate, and Tonon made the tough choice to close his gym indefinitely until he could find a better time to reopen.
Making the situation even tougher was that Tonon had relocated to that space just a few months prior.
Now, a better time has come, and Brunswick BJJ is officially open once again. The academy has found a new home within UFC Gym North Brunswick with a new schedule.
Though the future is uncertain for many martial arts gyms, it’s good to know that this one, at least, has found a happy ending in the midst of all the chaos.
