Everyday Porrada! If you train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, then you’ve heard this phrase before. Well, it’s more than just a phrase – it’s a philosophy and movement, with Romulo Barral as its founder. It’s a movement that, in the words of the website itself, represents: „… working, grinding, training every day to achieve your goal, your mission, your purpose in life.“ It stands for giving your best at all times in order to become better at what you do!
So, what can you learn from this philosophy, and how can it help you improve in BJJ?
ADD MORE INTENSITY AND FOCUS TO YOUR TRAINING!
The essence of those who follow the Everyday Porrada movement in Jiu Jitsu is that they train with intensity! Watch almost any video of Romulo Barral rolling with those on approximately the same level that he is, and you’ll notice that he rolls with great focus and intensity. He’s on the hunt for the submission, and he doesn’t stop before he gets it.
In effect, you should train with more grit, drive, and relentlessness! Stop going easy when you know that you could go harder, faster, and with more precision.
Develop BJJ goals, figure out what’s necessary for attaining them, and then get to work. Make that sweat pour out when you squeeze your Gi.
YOU CAN DO MUCH MORE THAN YOU THINK
In a similar spirit to the above-mentioned principle, the Everyday Porrada philosophy adds that you can do much more than you think you can.
Sometimes, you may truly be extremely fatigued and unable to go on. In those situations, it’s okay to rest… However, that’s rarely ever the case! It’s mostly your mind playing tricks on you, telling you that you should stop because you’re feeling uncomfortable. Because you’re gasping for air and because your muscles ache. But your body can keep going!
Try leading yourself with the „40% rule“, depicted in a book by a former Navy Seal, David Goggins; whenever you think that you’ve reached your limits, remember that you probably aren’t even halfway there! If you overcome your mind and the games it plays on you, you’ll realize that your body can achieve incredible feats – and strengthen your mind in the process.
QUIT WHINING WHEN THINGS DON’T GO YOUR WAY
A fantastic aspect of the Everyday Porrada movement is the no-excuses one. If things aren’t going your way – if you’ve lost on a tournament, if you’ve injured your knee, if you can’t learn the technique no matter how much you try to… Don’t whine about it!
Everyone encounters roadblocks on their Jiu Jitsu journey, that’s a given. But what differentiates those who become good at BJJ from those who don’t is how they deal with these obstacles. And you can be pretty sure that those who succeed aren’t the ones who sat down and cried because they „couldn’t do something“.
Instead, they thought about it for a bit, removed the dust off their shoulders, and got back to work.
EVERYDAY PORRADA IS A WAY OF LIFE, NOT JUST OF JIU JITSU
Lastly, remember that this philosophy and movement isn’t and shouldn’t be limited to the time you spend on the mats. Rather, you should apply this attitude to your everyday life.
Because, if you truly apply it in everything you do – your work, your hobbies, your family and friends time, everything – it will become a habit. And habits in one area of life have this neat nature of building up habits in other areas as well; which, ultimately, ends up with the strengthening of character and a more fulfilled, well-rounded and happier life.
