Do Women Face A Hurdle When Starting Jiu-Jitsu? Jocko Willink Weighs In

Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a gift… That will not just give you better physical fitness, but it will also grant you better self-confidence, self-respect, new friendships and experiences, and much more.
However, that is not to say that starting BJJ can’t be difficult. And especially, some may argue, that might be the case for women.

Jocko Willink understands that starting with Jiu-Jitsu might be difficult for some women. He explained why in a Modern Wisdom podcast episode:

I would say that it’s not normal for a girl or a woman to want some dude, all up on them. And that’s what Jiu-Jitsu is: you are all up on each other.
And, you know, for a lack of a better word – it’s very intimate contact that you have with another human being.

So, there is a hurdle.

However, this hurdle needs to be overcome:

It’s absolutely a hurdle for women and girls to get over. And, once they get over it, it’s like okay, cool.

And then, it’s much better to get over it on the mats, in a Jiu-Jitsu academy… Than it is to have to contend with that psychological hurdle when you’re in a problematic scenario and you’re being attacked.
That is not the time to try and figure out what matters and what doesn’t matter… What this feels like and what that feels like and, yeah.

In other words, even though starting with BJJ might be difficult, it’s important for the psyche:

You want to train and you want to overcome that hurdle in a nice, safe environment.
