Of all the controversies and debates that spawn from MMA fights, this may be one of the weirder ones.
A little over a week ago, Garry Tonon defeated Anthony Engelen by TKO in their ONE Championship fight. During the fight, though, people started asking a peculiar question: What was that thing in the back of Tonon’s shorts? Was it a cell phone?
A video from BJJ Scout zeroes in on the controversy and asks the questions we all want to know:
Tonon addressed the mystery in an interview on the MMA Hour, saying:
“It was definitely a cell phone. I had a girlfriend [at the time] — she’s now my ex — and I got to Japan and she was like, ‘You know, Garry, I feel like you’re really distant. You’re not giving me enough attention.’ So, you know, I wanted to make sure that she was the first person I called right after the fight was over. I had it in the back right in the drawstring. So I pull it out after the fight. I’m super excited, wanted to tell her that I… won, and this guy answered the phone. He said his name was Dillon. So obviously I just had to end it right there.”
Tonon followed up with some words of wisdom for competitive martial artists, saying that if their partner was being overbearing before a fight, they might just be talking to “some dude named Dillon” behind your back.
The conversation, of course, led into a follow-up discussion about the ever-controversial (and possibly girlfriend-stealing?) Dillon Danis, who Tonon says he now has no issue with despite the tension that previously existed between them.
We may never know how much of the cell phone revelation was true and how much was tongue-in-cheek humor, but hopefully, this provides some closure to everyone who was lying awake at night wondering what was in Garry Tonon’s pants.
