Danielle Kelly Thinks Back To The Time When She Had To Stand Up For Her BJJ Dreams

If you have a goal, a dream even, that you want to accomplish… You will encounter some obstacles along the way. That’s a given and there’s no going around it.
Sometimes, your own family will stand in the way as well. And not because they don’t love you, but on the contrary – because they want the best for you and your future (and present), because they don’t want to see you disappointed.

Such was the case for Danielle Kelly. Even though her mom was supportive, she did not see a future for her daughter in Jiu-Jitsu.
Kelly shared how it was in an interview with ONE Championship:

During that time, my mom would come to my tournaments and support me sometimes but it would always be like: “Danielle I don’t know why you keep doing this? It’s not gonna help your future. You need to stay in school, you need a real job. That’s what everyone was doing.”
And she’s not wrong for that.

Looking back, Kelly is grateful that she kept going and that she didn’t let the “noise” get to her:

I started in the sport where women fighting didnt make a dime. I look back and am really grateful I kept my head up and worked hard without the noise getting to me.

I’m thankful to be the few women that push the sport, and even competing on the biggest stages where Jiu-Jitsu athletes can make a living. even more thankful for everyone by my side.
