Have you ever considered the outcome of a fight between a CrossFit champion and a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt? The following story narrates an intriguing experience where two worlds collided.
Jason Khalipa, a well-known CrossFit legend, who has some BJJ experienced (purple belt and has competed), has won the CrossFit Games title multiple times and is recognized as one of the fittest men on earth. His exceptional strength, conditioning, and gymnastic abilities are unparalleled. On the other hand, Brazilian jiu jitsu black belts are renowned for their expertise in grappling and ground fighting. They have spent years mastering chokes, joint locks, and submissions.
Jason decided to put his skills to the test by arranging a friendly grappling session with two highly skilled BJJ black belts. They agreed to go at about 50-60% effort to avoid injuries. The first black belt, Miha Perhavec, quickly took Jason down and secured a dominant position. However, Jason’s sheer strength and explosiveness made it challenging for the black belt to finish any submissions but he caught him with a Peruvian necktie submission.
After a tiring 5 minutes, they tapped hands and switched partners. The second black belt had a similar experience, taking Jason down with ease but struggling to finish any choke or armlock against his strength and power. Jason then invited the black belts into his realm – the CrossFit gym. They completed a high-intensity workout consisting of rope climbs, heavy lifting, and gymnastic exercises. Both black belts were incredibly fatigued while Jason barely broke a sweat.
The lesson learned from this experience is that while BJJ black belts possess tremendous grappling skills, a world-class athlete like Jason with superior strength, power, and conditioning can still pose problems through sheer explosiveness and power. Sometimes, being the “fittest man on earth” has its advantages, even against grappling specialists!
