It’s official: Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington will be fighting for the interim welterweight championship at UFC 224. The event, which features a bantamweight title fight between Amanda Nunes vs. Raquel Pennington as the main card, will take place on May 12 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Both fighters boast impressive records, with dos Anjos (28-9) being a former lightweight champion and Covington being undefeated in his last five fights (dos Anjos is also undefeated in the three fights he’s had since moving up to welterweight).
The controversial Covington (13-1) has recently made headlines for reasons outside of his actual fights: He referred to Brazilians as “filthy animals” after defeating Demiean Maia in October 2017, then had a boomerang thrown at his head by Fabricio Werdum after the two fighters had an altercation in Sydney, Australia.
The current welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley, is expected to return to the octagon in July after recovering from shoulder surgery.
