BJJ: Dispelling Misconceptions with Tom DeBlass

On this gorgeous spring day, as I sit eating my Panera salad, I’d like to discuss the misconceptions of getting started in Brazilian jiu jitsu. Not the where to go, how much it costs or what you need… I’d like to delve deeper and discuss the fear behind starting; the misconceptions that keep you from walking thru the doors of a school to see what it’s all about! There are several excuses I’ve heard as to why someone can’t, shouldn’t or won’t start jiu jitsu. I believe that behind these excuses lies a fear of the unknown… A fear of failure, not knowing anything, not being able ENOUGH. However these misconceptions and fears are unfounded! You don’t have to BE ANYTHING other than willing to try. Try and you will succeed. Why? Because everyone starts at the beginning! Everyone must take that first step, must tie on that white belt & begin learning. Out of shape? So what! You won’t be after you start training! Release the fear of stepping outside your comfort zone and try something new!

Tom DeBlass addresses these misconceptions surrounding jiu jitsu in the following. Show it to the people you know who show interest, but have excuses at the ready as to why they won’t.

"I need to get in shape before I try Jiu-Jitsu" is one of the biggest misconceptions there is. Jiu-Jitsu is what will get you in shape! Find an Academy close to you, enroll, and make one of the best decisions of your life.
