One of the worst things you could do during a BJJ roll or a BJJ match is to second-guess your technique. To think twice about your next move; this will only stop you in your tracks and render you unable to do anything successfully.
Brian Glick explains why doing this is a grave mistake:
Once you decide on a course of action, it’s both painful AND a misuse of time to spend the next several moments wondering if you’ve made the right decision. You can’t control every reaction and response from your partner – that’s part of Jiu-Jitsu! Constantly re-examining whether this is the “right way” will usually sabotage your work and end up dispersing your physical and mental energy.
Sure, sometimes you need to reconsider what to do. But that’s a whole lot different than second-guessing:
So you may need to pause for consideration if you’re stuck – that’s OK. Analyzing is different than wavering, being halfway in and halfway out.
Finally, you shouldn’t second-guess things when you roll or compete, simply because all of that energy could be used towards making something work:
Second-guesses and reappraisals aren’t just confusing. They disrupt the effort of your subconscious to make the plan work.
When you waste your creative energy wondering about the plan, you burn the fuel you could put into making it succeed. If you run into problems, the right thing to do is adjust the course and keep moving forward.
The wrong thing is to turn around, try to head back and start over again (or to give up completely!).
