If you’re looking to improve your Leg Lock game (or even if you just started developing it), then you simply have to learn how to enter into Leg Lock positions, such as the Honeyhole… Even when you’re starting from standing and your training partner/opponent from seated guard. Yes, even from standing – and one of the best ways to do so is by doing a Backstep.
The Backstep is one of the most basic entries into the Honeyhole from standing and it isn’t too complicated. You just need to drill it a bit and get a couple of details right.
Jon Thor Blank explains and demonstrates these details below.
THE BACKSTEP – A BASIC ENTRY INTO THE HONEYHOLE
To get it started, Jon first posts his hands onto the training partner’s knees. This’ll make your partners think that you’re going for a guard pass.
Then, you’ll step inside their legs. Do it in such a manner that you twist your foot at an angle slightly, and that this foot is deep inside their space. From here, you’ll do a simple Backstep over their leg; make sure not to rotate too much, as doing so will render the technique obsolete.
Once there, take a hold of their leg and pick it up while scooping your own leg underneath it and locking them in place. Watch the video below to see how Jon Thor Blank does it, as well as to learn other important details:
