Back Control, Are Hooks Really That Important?

Are hooks really that important in back control?

If you’re competing for points, then yes, hooks are that important. You won’t be awarded points unless you have two hooks in.

However, in self-defense situations or submission-only competitions, hooks are simply a bonus, not a necessity.

This is according to Rigan Machado brown belt Coach Tom Davey from the Grappling Academy. What’s important, Coach Tom says, is keeping your chest to the person’s back.
