UK-based jiu-jitsu athlete Ffion Davies revealed yesterday that she had earned her black belt from Darragh O Conaill after a successful brown belt career.
Although Davies’ time as a brown belt was relatively short, spanning just under a year and a half, she’s established herself as one of the rising stars in elite women’s jiu-jitsu. She was one of the athletes selected to compete in EBI’s first ever female bracket in July 2017, then followed up with multiple successful performances at Polaris.
While she ended up being the first opponent Bia Mesquita defeated on her way to the top of the podium at ADCC, Davies became the first Welsh competitor to grapple at the tournament when she won the European Trials. Then, in 2018, she earned gold in the open weight division at No-Gi Euros, then silver at the UAEJJF World Pro before finally earning the coveted title of World Champion in June.
Given how much Davies can accomplish in under two years (and over the rest of her earlier jiu-jitsu career), it’s a safe assumption that we’ll only be seeing more great things from her as a black belt.
