In the video above my friend and training partner Ritchie Yip shows a really cool throw that goes directly into a match-ending submission.
Specifically it’s a combination of a throw called Yoko Sumi Gaeshi and the kneebar submission.
Yoko Sumi Gaeshi is one of my very favourite throws, and I learned the details of it from UFC champion and Sambo practitioner Oleg Taktarov.
This throw starts with obtaining an unorthodox behind-the-back grip and then turns into a sacrifice throw in which you roll underneath your opponent (click here to see a breakdown I did of the four throwing options from that initial grip).
The beautiful thing about this throw, from a BJJ perspective at least, is that it’s actually very similar to sweeping someone from the guard. So the motion shouldn’t be totally unfamiliar.
And most of the time when you use this throw your opponent’s leg will be within easy reach, setting up the kneebar submission.
The best time to attack with a submission is when your opponent is off balance, in motion and unprepared to defend. And that makes the brief interval after a throw a golden opportunity to go for the kill and finish the match!
Today’s technique is one example of linking a throw and a submission. I hope you find it useful in your grappling journey!
P.S. If you’re in Vancouver, BC and want to get your BJJ on I would definitely suggest checking out Ritchie’s school at infighting.ca.
