A Better Deadlift Variation For BJJ & Easier on the Lower Back

The deadlift is an integral part of traditional bodybuilding and many athletes’ strength and conditioning programs. To take some of the stress off the lower back, Al Gerard developed the trap bar in the ’80s – a hexagonal barbell where you stand inside and lift from your center of gravity. This move may activate your quads and hamstrings more than your back, while also providing a less taxing alternative to the deadlift. It can also help build explosive movement, so why not give it a go?

If you’ve been deadlifting for a while, try incorporating the trap bar into your routine to see if it helps increase your power and bring some new growth. Check out this great video from ChewJitsu on how to use it!
