Have you ever felt like an imposter before? Usually after some success or promotion you are recognized for. You begin to question. . . Why me?
This is a situation many of us find ourselves in with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. In fact, that is the question that was asked by our buddy Lee.
He says that he was promoted recently in Brazilian Jiujitsu. Just a stripe promotion on his belt. But he feels like that there are so many other people inside his BJJ gym that are far more deserving. In his words, he feels like an imposter and wants to know how to change his headspace with the issue.
I had a similar issue when I was promoted to Blue Belt and the whole idea of feeling like you’re not where everyone else thinks you are reminds me of when I was a fat kid before BJJ and Wrestling completely changed me.
When I eventually lost all the weight and got into better physical condition through diet and exercise. In spite of the weight loss I experienced. I still didn’t feel any different. I still felt like the same fat kid. Even though everyone around me could see it.
It took some time for me to come to grips with the fact that I had changed. Even if I didn’t think I had. Wrestling and the coaches and people around me helped me realize this.
And this was a similar experience to when I got my Blue Belt in BJJ.
I got in more detail about the imposter syndrome that I’ve experienced in the video. Hopefully it’s useful for you in your BJJ training.
Thanks!
