Playing shin-to-shin guard and beating the knee slice – Nelson Puentes

If I’m in a sitting up guard facing a standing opponent, I usually try and aggressively go shin to shin and try for a knee push sweep, or I’ll try and get underneath them and establish SLX. Is this a solid approach? What are some grips I should be looking to get to prevent them from flattening me down (which happens a lot and I end in bottom half-guard?
