If you thought the turtle was simply a defensive position, you were sorely mistaken.
First, it’s a transitional position, one where you move to a better position, such as an open or closed guard.
Second, much like the guards, it’s an attacking position as well as a defensive position. As Professor Abraham Marte once put it in a seminar: it’s a sword as well as a shield.
“What?” you might be asking yourself. “How the Hell am I supposed to attack someone when he’s on my back?”
