TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — Marana Vrandenburg was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a child. She lost her sight in 2005 and started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu four years ago to learn self-defense.
“Everything is done by feel; you can feel what somebody’s movements are,” said Vrandenburg.
She’s visiting from California to train at Jedi Jiu-Jitsu in south Tulsa this week. Her size and lack of sight don’t slow her down.
“She’s just killing it. She’s throwing us around, giving us a hard time. She has the heart of a lion,” said Blake Hayes, a trainer at Jedi Jiu-Jitsu.
Vrandenburg travels the country as a personal trainer working with disabled veterans. She says this training helps motivate her and others.
“It’s knowing you have a goal and a purpose and constantly doing your best to reach those goals and feel your purpose,” she said.
Vrandenburg’s advice to anyone wanting to accomplish something new is to just do it.
