WNO: Gordon Ryan Submits Philip Rowe 4 Times In 15 Minutes

Gordon Ryan is back to competition in an explosive fashion – as easily as it gets, too. His first appearance after he took a break from competition due to his stomach issue was nothing short of a domineering one; he submitted UFC’s Philip Rowe four times in 15 minutes at Who’s Number One (WNO).

The pace of the two athletes seemingly went hand-in-hand with the exhibition nature of the match. They went against each other in a light-mannered way, with Ryan even throwing a few mock punches towards the end of the bout.
His first submission was a Heel Hook from the Cross Ashi position, just 45 seconds into the match. Then, he secured an Arm-In Guillotine Choke after around 5 minutes. Afterwards, in the final 5 minutes of the bout, he successfully applied a variation of a Front Triangle Choke and of a Side Triangle Choke:

I hit a variation of a Front Triangle, called an Ankle Sankaku where the ankle is a little bit different than a usual Front Triangle. Then I hit a Side Triangle, Yoko Sankaku, and finished him with that.

Ryan continued to explain that he was also playing with back escapes:

I wanted to do a little bit more back escape stuff because that’s what I just released the DVD on. But he only took my back once, so I just did pin escapes and some submission escapes, Armbar escapes, and Side Control and Mount stuff. That’s coming out in the future.

With addition to that, Philip Rowe seemed to have been injured coming into the match, as his right hand was wrapped. He explained why:

I broke my hand on Saturday. I came to this venue with a cast on. When I got to the lobby, I took it off. I broke my fifth metacarpal and I still showed up.
I didn’t tell anybody… [I] took 4 shots of Jack, wrapped it up, and tried to smack him in the face with it.

UFC’s welterweight also praised the BJJ community and what the sport has done for him:

UFC’s a byproduct of me training Jiu-Jitsu, so I respect everybody.
If they’re gonna call me to show up, of course, I’m gonna show up every time.
