A pair of women’s Who’s Number One title belts will be on the line later this year. On October 20, veteran black belts Beatriz Mesquita and Luiza Monteiro will square off for the 135-pound title, while Nathalie “Tata” Ribeiro will face Ffion Davies for the 125-pound championship.
An ADCC champion and seven-time IBJJF world champion (six times in the gi, once in no-gi), Beatriz Mesquita is one of the most accomplished competitors in women’s jiu-jitsu. A well-rounded grappler, Mesquita has excellent wrestling and guard passing, but tends to find much of her success working from the guard. She most recently competed in February at BJJ Stars V, where she showed off her ever-developing leg lock game to defeat Thamara Ferreira on points.
Luiza Monteiro is, in her own right, incredibly accomplished. She is a five-time IBJJF world champion (twice in the gi, three times in no-gi) and has long been one of Atos’ top competitors. Like Mesquita, she is a well-rounded grappler with the ability to attack from all positions. She last competed at Fight To Win 168, earning a kneebar win over Vedha Toscano.
The 125-pound WNO title will also be on the line. Tata Ribeiro is a top Checkmat black belt and a no-gi world champion. A guard specialist, she last competed in May at Subversiv 5, where she picked up a pair of victories before losing to Rafaela Guedes.
Ffion Davies is one of Europe’s best black belt competitors. She is a no-gi world champion and a three-time European Open champion. In contrast to Ribeiro’s guard-heavy approach, Davies has excellent judo and guard passing. Davies last competed in 2020 at a Polaris event, defeating Magdalena Loska by rear-naked choke.
