What Is Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ)?
Often referred to as just jiu-jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial arts system that is used to learn the art of combat and self-defense by way of the path of least resistance. Where style is concerned, grappling and fighting on the ground are common in BJJ. As the sport continued to develop, BJJ began to experiment with different practices and judo adaptations thanks to the likes of some of two of the sport’s early practitioners — Hélio and Carlos Gracie. Eventually, the sport took on its own distinct form and began to grow and develop.
One of the major philosophies of BJJ is that a person who is smaller and weaker than another can still defend himself or herself against a bigger and stronger individual. BJJ purports that this is done through mastering proper techniques, using leverage, and as is characteristic of BBJ, taking the fight to the ground. Once an opponent has successfully wrestled his or her opponent to the ground, chokeholds and joint-locks are used to defeat the opponent and secure victory.
Training and Competition
The training in BJJ can be used for purposes of sport, such as in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions, and of course in self-defense. This is due to the fact that sparring (also known as rolling), live drilling and overall peak performance are emphasized in training. Additionally, BJJ focuses on mastering the art of securing submissions without the using strikes while allowing for the full use of speed and power. These are all skills useful to performing at the highest level in grappling sports tournaments like MMA. The emphasis on the use of speed and power is especially sufficient preparation for tournaments.
Getting Started: Who can practice BJJ?
When one thinks of a combat sport, we automatically think of a men only territory. However, this is not necessarily the case. Women and men alike can learn the art of BJJ, and even participate in tournaments if they so desire. As one of the most popular and successful fighters in the sport Rhonda Rousey has indicated, the inclination to fight or defend oneself goes beyond our gender. Women can learn the art of combat, just as men can. Those who would like to practice the art of BJJ can find a training center to get started. At the very least, ensure that the center has sufficient facilities and properly trained trainers. Get started today!
