Keenan Cornelius has had a very busy year in 2019 and has now managed to finish the construction of his new gym, Legion Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego. Cornelius started the year by leaving Andre Galvao and ATOS Jiu-Jitsu, one of the biggest and most successful competition schools in the world. Shortly after, he represented BJJ Globetrotters in competition while he decided what he would do next and where he would eventually call home after leaving somewhere he’d trained at for longer than most people train in their entire life.
It didn’t take long at all for him to announce that he was going to branch out on his own and open up Legion Jiu-Jitsu Head Quarters to the public by the start of 2020. Shortly after this, he competed under his own affiliation’s name for the first time and made a huge impact in doing so by walking away with absolute gold at No Gi Pan Ams in September.
The end to last year was a little less fantastic for Keenan Cornelius as he was forced to withdraw from ADCC 2019 in the final days leading up to the tournament due to injury. The last month or so of the year was then focused on getting his new gym up and running so that he could start taking on students of his own. This year should hold some exciting prospects for Cornelius as he can finally prepare for competition in the comfort of his own gym. Not to mention the number of superfights he’ll no doubt take part in by the end of the year; he’s already had the gauntlet laid down by a surging Tommy Langaker after a stunning performance at Polaris 12. Regardless of what he chooses to do next year, that’s one match that Cornelius should jump on as soon as possible.
