Rener and Ryron Gracie are not fans of zero tolernance, nor is actor and Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner Vince Vaughn for that matter.
Zero tolerance states that any act of physical aggression can get a student in trouble, even if it’s done in self-defense. According to lawyers.com:
A zero tolerance policy requires school officials to hand down specific, consistent, and harsh punishment—usually suspension or expulsion—when students break certain rules. The punishment applies regardless of the circumstances, the reasons for the behavior (like self-defense), or the student’s history of discipline problems. That’s why some critics call these policies “one strike and you’re out.”

While zero tolerance policies might be well-meaning, they have the negative impact of harming rather than helping victims. As Rener points out in the video below, they handcuff the victims’ hands behind their back, as they give them no means of self-defense.
