Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) 121 took place on Friday, January 14, live from Dallas, TX. On a card filled with finishes, one stood out, in particular. Undefeated prospect Michael “The Mullet” Cyr put on a grappling clinic against fellow prospect Alden Coria, displaying brutal jiu-jitsu on his way to a third-round submission win.
Cyr and Coria spent the first two rounds of their three-round affair exchanging on the feet with both fighters finding moments of success. In the third round, Cyr was able to take advantage of a shot from Coria, sprawling and taking Coria’s back directly into a twister position.
Cyr appeared to be just inches away from finishing the twister.
Cyr punished Coria with elbows to the body and cranked on the twister, but was unable to finish the spinal lock. The pressure did, however, force Coria to give up his back.
Cyr sunk in the rear-naked choke with Coria’s arm trapped behind his own back — a brutal finish to a classic submission.
Although Cyr came into the fight with a perfect professional MMA record just like Coria, Cyr was a four-to-one underdog. With the win, he improves his record to 4-0, with all wins by finish and three by submission. This fight was the 26-year old bantamweight’s LFA debut.
Coria drops to 5-1 with the loss. This was his first loss in MMA, including the amateur ranks. At just 23-years old, though, Coria remains a prospect to watch.
