UFC 289 proved itself a night to remember for fight fans across the globe. In the co-main event, Charles Oliveira made a victorious comeback from his title loss to Islam Makhachev last fall by delivering a shocking TKO finish against Beneil Dariush in the very first round.
Despite an early takedown attempt turned closed guard pull that forced Oliveira on to his back for the first few minutes of the opening round, the former champ recovered his feet in time to deliver several hard blows to Dariush that sent the other man reeling. Though Dariush attempted to recover with a half-hearted single leg attempt, the Brazilian remained relentless, delivering blow after blow to the grounded Dariush until the referee called a stop to the action.
Meanwhile, over in the main event, two-division champion Amanda Nunes won an unanimous decision against bantamweight title challenger Irene Aldana after a dominant five-round performance. In the post-fight interview, a smiling Nunes then announced her retirement from MMA. Whether that retirement sticks remains to be seen.
