Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson will step into the Octagon one more time before the year’s end, and this time, he’ll be doing it against Charles Oliveira at UFC 256.
The matchup was first reported by ESPN.
Ferguson, a jiu-jitsu black belt under 10th Planet’s Eddie Bravo, was riding a twelve-fight winning streak until May of this year, when he was defeated via TKO by Justin Gaethje, taking the interim lightweight title away from him. Ferguson has previously stated that he wanted to get one more fight in before the end of 2020, and thankfully, the UFC was able to get him one against Oliveira.
Oliveira, also a BJJ black belt, is certainly worthy of the bout against Ferguson. Nearly 2/3 of his victories have been won by submission, and he’s finished every one of his bouts in his current seven-fight winning streak. Oliveira last fought in March to a guillotine choke win against Kevin Lee, and it will be interesting to see what happens between two fighters with such great finishing power.
UFC 256 will take place on Saturday, December 12 and can be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.
